Trent Caviness is a three year varsity player, two-time scholar athlete, and a 2nd Team All-SCAC selection during his junior year. This year, Trent is the team’s most versatile player and is serving as the team’s floor captain. He currently leads the team, which sits at 12-2 and tied for first in the SCAC, in sets played and aces, second in kills, assists, and blocks, and third in digs. Junior Madeline Thorne is one of the most driven, hardworking athletes I have seen in my 25 years as head coach. Her unrelenting persistence has allowed her to rise through the diving ranks of Section III, is unbeaten in competition this year, and is ranked in the NYS Top 30. Madeline barely qualified for Sectional competition her freshman year, yet set a goal to qualify for the State meet. Since her first year on varsity, and dream of qualifying for states, she has worked out 5 days a week for the past several years taking every opportunity to hone her skills and improve. This past weekend Madeline won the South Jefferson Diving invitational beating CNY’s top ranked diver by over 10 points and qualifying for the State meet in the process. Madeline is a true testimony that hard work pays off, and the harder one is willing to work, the greater that payoff!

Congratulation Jaiquawn and keep up the good work. Rate & Comment
Senior captain D’Ante Zapanta has led the CNS Northstar baseball team to a 9-3 start with six games left in the regular season. D’Ante has a team high 511 batting average with 23 hits and 18 RBI’s so far this season. This past week he was 6 for 9 with 8 RBI’s in 3 games and made many great defensive plays that kept the Northstars in games. D’Ante is a three year varsity player but this is the first year he is fully healthy and showing his true potential as a player. After winning the starting role as a sophomore, D’Ante suffered a season ending knee injury that kept him from playing the remainder of his sophomore season. As a junior, he had a decent year but this year as a senior he is leading the Northstars both on and off the field. D’Ante leads by example and is a perfect example as a high school student athlete if you put the hard work and dedication in to something on and off the field that work ethic typically pays off. Rate & Comment

Jessica Meneilly is the quintessential leader-by-example for the CNS Girls Lacrosse team. Her hard work and dedication are on display every game as she takes draws for the team, plays midfield, and rarely, if ever, leaves the field. Recently, she had a five-goal performance against top ranked Fayetteville-Manlius and excelled on the draw circle in a victory over perennial powerhouse West Genesee. Jessica is a four-year varsity player and earned First Team All-League Honors last season. She will continue her play next year at Le Moyne College for Hall of Fame coach Kathy Taylor. Rate & Comment

The Northstars Ice Hockey team is off to a nice start (2-0-1), largely in part to strong defensive efforts led by goalie and Senior captain Jack Doren. Jack followed up Auburn by turning away 11 out of 12 shots against Mohawk Valley and notching a shutout on 19 shots versus Fulton. Rate & Comment

Olivia Salvador is a leader on and off the court. Olivia is a senior this year and took over the role as libero last year in her junior season. Olivia leads our team with 174 digs this season and 324 digs in her varsity career. The libero is often a role that gets overlooked. Without Olivia on the back line we could not run our offense. Olivia also has a very strong serve and has 30 aces for the season. Olivia is one of our three captains. She is a team leader and a great role model for the athletes that are coming up through the program. Olivia has very big shoes to fill and we are going to miss her come next season. Olivia is planning on playing in college next year, she has not made her final decision on what college she will be attending next fall.

Nathan Osborne became the Section III Wrestling Champion at 113lbs last Saturday evening at the SRC Arena on the campus of OCC. Nate was also a champion at both the Cazenovia and Port Byron tournaments. He accomplished his Sectional Championship title by defeating Tyler Schardt of Bville 13-3, Stephen Pascarella of Liverpool 10-8 and in the finals beat Jacob Cavallo of Bville 6-0. Nate’s semi-final match with Pascarella found him down by a score of 7-0, Nate however was determined to find a way to overcome the deficit. With two five point moves he was able to take the match away from Pascarella to place himself in the finals match. In his finals match he faced an opponent who had beaten him the week before by a score of 5-1. Once again he was determined and cruised to a 6-0 victory to claim the 15th sectional title for CNS since 1993. By doing so he has qualified to represent CNS in the New York State Tournament on Friday February 24th and 25th at the Times Union Center in Albany New York. Senior Steve Cooley has been a standout for CNS Swimming in the 100 free and 50 free this year. He recently posted first place in both events in a close meet against FM. His toughness down the stretch in the 100 free helped CNS to pull away from FM in a hard fought meet. Steve also swam a personal best 52.54 in the 100 free on senior night against Weedsport. Steve has been a reliable anchor on the Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay for the past two seasons, both of which look to break school records at sectionals this year. Steve has been a great leader, and would be the first to credit his fellow seniors and teammates for his success, and the success of the team this year.

Jessica Barry, a 3-year varsity volleyball student-athlete has been an asset to the CNS Northstar's on the court during her senior season. Jessica was plunged into one of the most demanding positions on the court this year moving from middle/right side to setter. Jessica has handled the position change with poise while also adapting to a new offensive and defensive system. Jessica has become a more vocal leader on the court. Jessica plays within herself always hustling, feeding off of her teammate’s energy and enthusiasm to help her team to victory. She leads the team in assists (138), and blocks (10), while also making a positive contribution with her serving and passing. This week against Liverpool, Jess was a key component to the win with 28 assists, 13 digs, 5 kills, and 2 aces in a 5 set match against the Warriors. Off the court, Jessica and her team spent Sunday, September 25th volunteering at the 18th annual Buddy Walk.
