No. 1 Cicero-North Syracuse holds off No. 4 Nottingham in Class AA girls sectional semifinal

It’s tough to beat a team three times in one season, but No. 1 Cicero-North Syracuse accomplished the feat Sunday with a 66-56 win over No. 4 Nottingham.  Behind Jessica Cook’s 29 points, the Lady Northstars increased their win streak to six games. The sophomore forward imposed her will throughout the game, and Nottingham had a tough job containing her inside scoring presence.  This Class AA semifinal was fairly close, considering C-NS defeated Nottingham by 32 points earlier this month. Nottingham connected on four 3-pointers and led 12-8 at one point in the first quarter, but after the halftime break, the Lady Northstars put together a 20-point third quarter to give them a 53-41 lead going into the fourth. At this point, Cook had 22 points.  “I told them to stay with our strengths and to play to that," C-NS coach Eric Smith said after the game. "We knocked down some shots and got the ball to the right people. They got in foul trouble, and I don’t think that helped them at all, but we took advantage of it.”  Nottingham sophomore Amaya Williams led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 25, before fouling out in the fourth quarter. She finished with five 3-pointers.  The injury bug bit Nottingham less than a minute into the third quarter when sophomore guard Lauryn Withrow went down after a hard foul, grabbing her right ankle. A trainer immediately came to the floor and play was stopped for almost five minutes before she got up and walked to the end of the bench. Withrow did not return for the remainder of the game. With the win, the Lady Northstars advance to Friday’s Class AA sectional final in the Carrier Dome against No. 2 West Genesee, the defending sectional champions. In the regular season, C-NS split games with the Lady Wildcats -- losing by three points at home and winning by 11 on the road.  “We’re going to have to play a little bit more poised than we played today if we want to win,” Smith said.
